Cover "Zagreb"

Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, from 1933 to 1945 Minister of Propaganda in Nazi-German, noted in his diary in connection with April 24, 1940 that "the Nostradamusbrochure" was published in The Netherlands and Switzerland and was quite sensational.[1] On this website, it is supposed that with the brochure which was published in Switzerland, , Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941? La réponse est donnée par: Les vrayes centuries et prophéties de Maître Michel Nostradamus was meant, the French version of Was bringt das Jahr 1940? Die Antwort geben uns  Les vrayes Centuries et Propheties de Maistre Michel Nostradamus", a national-socialist text about Nostradamus, written in November - December 1939 by Hans-Wolfgang Herwarth von Bittenfeld, prof. dr. Karl Bömer and Leopold Gutterer, chief employees, working at the Ministry of Propaganda.[2] Underneath the subtitle of Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941?, it read: Interpretation nouvelle de Ant. Rossier, (l'homme qui a prédit, dans la Revue Prédictions, le tournant de la Chine en mars-avril 1940 et le tournant de l'Europe en avril-mai 1940).
In the collection of the National and University Library of Slovenia (NUK) in Ljubljana, there is a copy of the brochure
Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi. Odgovor u centurijama i proročanstvima Maestra Mihaela Nostradamusa. Interpretacija Antuna Rossier-a koji je u reviji "Predictions" predkazao sudbinu Kine i Evrope u prvoj polovini 1940. Godine (tr.: Things which happened and things which will happen. The answer in the centuries and predictions of master Michael Nostradamus. Interpreted by Anton Rossier who in his magazine "Predictions" predicted the revolutions which took place in the first half of 1940 in Chine and Europe). Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi is, as shows its subtitle, the Croation translation of Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941?. At the bottom of page 16, it reads: Genève, 1940 - Ant. Rossier.

Dating, printing, circulation number and price
On top of page 1 of Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi is a punch mark of the logo of the university library of Ljubljane. Also, a date is punched: 31. VII. 1940. This might mean that on July 31, 1940, this brochure was acquired by the library. From this, it follows that the Croatian translation of Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941? was made between April 24, 1940 and July 31, 1940, and next brought into circulation.
Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi is printed by Zadruzna stamparija in Zagreb. In thet thirties, this company published various kinds of books, among which storybooks for children, lexicons and books dealing with philosophy and politics.
On the cover page of
Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi, it reads I Izdanje (first edition). According to a report of dr. Ernst Brauweiler, head of the Ausland section of the Ministry of Propaganda, about the activities of his section in the period January 1 - August 31, 1940, 25.000 copies were printed of a Croatian version of a Nostradamusbrochure which was translated into eight languages. The grand total of all versions was 83.000 copies.[3] On this website, it is supposed that with the Croatian version, the brochure Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi is meant.
On the left bottom of the cover page, the price of this brochure was printed: 2 Dinar.

Text division
In Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, the text is divided in two parts: an untitled part about the life and work of Nostradamus and predictions in the Centuries which are fulfilled, and a part, entitled Gegenwart und Zukunft, in which predictions in the Centuries are discussed which deal with the actual situation and the future. In Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi, the text is divided in eleven chapters, as in Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941?. The untitled epilogue in Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941?, which contains an advertisement of Rossier, is not part of Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi.

The text of Le Profezie de Maestro Michele Nostradamus anno 1558, the Italian version of Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, is also divided into chapters, in a way which has many correspondences with the text division in Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941? and Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi, with which chapter titles the first six chapter titles of Sta nam donosi 1940?, the Serb version, correspond. The seventh chapter title of this version corresponds with the German chapter title Gegenwart und Zukunft and with the chapter titles Un coup d'oeil vers l'avenir, Sguardo sul presente e sull'avvenire and Pogled u buducnost in subsequently the French, the Italian and the Croatian version. The Croation version is a translation of the French version. Because of the corresponding chapter titles, which with the exception of the title Gegenwart und Zukunft are not present in Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, the question rises if the Italian and the Serb version were also translated from the French.

They can be found on the back cover page, the inner side of the front cover page and the inner side of the back cover page. They do not occur in the Dutch, English or Italian version of Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, which all contained illustrations.

On the inner side of the cover page, two astrological figures are depicted, with the caption Nostradamusovi znakovi i racuni (tr.: signs and calculations by Nostradamus). In these figures, the world history is divided into eras and linked to zodiacal signs. In the upper figure, the zodiacal signs do not coincide with the circle of constellations (precession of the equinoxes). In both figures, the names of the eras are given in French. These figures can be traced back to l'Ecroulement de l'Europe d'après les Prophéties de "Nostradamus" (Em. Ruir, Paris, 1939). There, the upper figure on the inner side of the front cover page is depicted on page 26; the lower figure (turned 90 degrees to the left) is depicted on page 72.
On top of the inner side of the back cover, a zodiac is depicted, with the caption Symbol, znacajan za sadsanjicu (tr.: symbol, important for the present period). In the inner side of the zodiac, the borders of France are depicted with a zigzag line between the signs of Taurus, Capricorn, Cancer and Libra. At the right of Libra the astrological symbol of Saturn is depicted. It looks as if the small circle in the midst of the zigzag line marks the city of Tours. At the bottom of the inner side of the back cover, a celestial map is depicted with the caption Komet u novembru 196? (tr.: comet in November 196?). The names of the constellations on this celestial map are given in French. In l'Ecroulement de l'Europe..., the celestial map and its caption is depicted on page 106. N
Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi an allusion has been made to a comet, which would appear in the sixties.
Om the back, there is a picture of a cross on a globe. On top of the cross, there is a shining sun. From the globe, a snake climbs on the cross. At the right, a dragon seems to try to push the cross down. This caption reads:  Invazija zutih (tr.: the yellow invasion). In l'Ecroulement de l'Europe, this picture can be found on the pages 43 and 129.

It is clear that the l'Ecroulement de l'Europe... was a source of illustrations.[4] Perhaps the pictures on the inner side of the front cover page are an allusion to the course of history and the beginning and duration of the Third Reich (Ère Nouvelle, Millennium) and as such an allusion to the comment upon quatrain 10-31, in which Germany is associated with le saint Empire
In l'Ecroulement de l'Europe..., Ruir writes about the "yellow invasion" that this is the coming from the east of the third Antichrist. Arab and Japanese forces will heavily attack Europe. In Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi, this is not discussed at all. The picture
"the yellow invasion" might have been inserted as an illustration of Rossier's predictions in his monthly Prédictions about the revolutions in China in the first half of 1940. The subtitle of Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi refers to this, like the subtitle of Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941?. The first issue of Prédictions, however, does not contain this illustration.

An outdated propaganda element
At the end of April, 1940, Que se passera-t-il entre le printemps 1940 et le printemps 1941? was brought into circulation. The title of the ninth chapter was: La France ne sera pas touchée (tr.: France is not touched). In an undated note in connection with a secret daily propaganda meeting in the Ministry of Propaganda, Martin Henry Sommerfeldt, who in his quality of spokesman of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht attended these meetings, wrote that Goebbels ordered that a certain quatrain text had to explained in the sense that France would only temporarily be occupied.[5] In fictitious reviews and letters in Dutch regional newspapers, it was noted, because of page 34 of Hoe zal deze oorlog eindigen?, the Dutch version of Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, that neither Germany, nor England, but France would be the winner of this war.[6]
The ninth chapter of Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi is entitled Francuska ne ci biti pogodjena (tr.: Frankrijk wordt niet geraakt). Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi was written between the end of April and the end of July 1940. In that period, Germany overrided France. Due to the armistice in Compiègne (June 22, 1940), France was divided into a part, occupied by the Germans, and a so-called free zone (the Vichy-republic). Apparently, these events were no reason to revise the text of Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi on this point. One can only guess if this outdated propaganda element had a negative impact on the credibility.

The discussed quatrains in Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi versus Was bringt das Jahr 1940?
Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi does not contain French quatrain texts. All quatrain texts are in Croatian. On page 16, the discussion of quatrain 10-31 contains the French words Le saint Empire.
Except for quatrain 02-83, all quatrains in Was bringt das Jahr 1940? are also discussed in Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi. The comments in Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditiare identical with the comments in Was bringt das Jahr 1940?. Compared with Was bringt das Jahr 1940?, no quatrains are added to Što se dogadjalo i što će se dogoditi
